Learned the hard way

The issue is PROCRASTINATION. Kalau dalam bahasa melayu, kita panggil buat kerja last minit. 12 tengah hari 23 Mac lepas merupakan deadline bagi 3rd year final report submission. Final report ini bernilai 0.5 unit. Sangat besar, sebesar satu course(subject).

Aku sangat cuak apabila dengar dia dah siap, aku tak siap lagi. 12 p.m., I am still furiously writing my report using Texnik a Latex editor. At that moment, aku sudah pasrah, terpaksa hantar report lambat. Tiba-tiba Abdul Latif telefon kata dia kat UCL tanya tempat solat Jumaat. Maka aku pun kata kul 1 nanti kita jumpe, aku bawak ko ke tempat solat Jumaat. Kemudian aku terus berusaha menyiapkan report.

Dah lah aku tak kenal no ni dan suara pemanggil tu. Pointless.

P/s: aku suspek tertekan jer ni. Hahar saja nak kasi misteri sket.

Point to ponder

How long do we spend on clicking the mouse compared to holding the tasbih?

Suddenly this question appears in my mind. This is related to one of the talk given by Ustaz Hasrizal. He said, in these days we normally spend our time more on using the computer rather than staying in the mosque. If we spend very long time on this matter, how much time left to do Ibadah? Therefore it is vital for us to make our intention right, for the sake of Allah and observe the do and don'ts while doing anything in our life. So it will be counted as Ibadah.

wallahua'lam.

Tah

Semalam bosan giler. Sebenarnya banyak kerja kena buat. Tapi entah kenapa malas nak buat. Nasib baik lepas tengok citer The Lion of the Desert berjaya mengagahkan diri untuk menyiapkan power point presentation.

Bila tengok movie2 yang macam ni selalu membuatkan perasaan aku bercampur-baur. Geram, sedih, bersemangat dsb.

Tapi biasanya kejap jer, dua tiga hari padam le. Hu hu, lemah betui. Apapun keadilan tehapdap diri sendiri kena dilaksanakan jugak, kerja tak siap-siap lagi ni.. Ok mari berjuang siapkan presentation!!!

Walk or run? Whatever you do, the computer knows...

Good news. I had managed to sort out some problems in my project. The key problems was how to extract data from the sequence of video taken. There are many different approaches had been done and I had chosen a method based on cyclic motion as shown in a paper published in IEEE journal.

You can imagine your leg as a pendulum. It swings from one back to front and goes back again to form a complete cycle while you are walking or running. As this happens, the distance between your head and the ground and the hips angle changes. This two measurements is enough to allow the computer to determine whether you are walking or running.

For my project, I define the initial cycle as when the hip angle is zero. The key characteristic of a walking person is the hip angle is maximum when the head-ground distance is maximum in during the cycle. Whereas for running, both angle and head-ground are maximum. If you wonder why or how this can happen, it is because when you walk, both of your leg have contact with the ground while your legs spread. This causing the distance measured become less. While running, there will be a moment when you are 'on-air' or the proper term is double-float. While flying, you head is in a position bit higher than usual. You may not believe what I said, therefore I will present some results based on my project to illustrate further.

Once you get the data required, you can used complicated classifier such as Neural Network or simple if else statement to recognise type of motion detected in the video.

My next aim is to understand how to use Neural Network to automatically detect peoples behaviour based on the given data. Hopefully this can be done by this Friday.

The moral of the story, be worried guys! especially those who are living in Big Brother cities. You're being watched! Many surveillance operators nowadays have installed behaviour recognition module in their surveillance system [1, 2] . Obviously the software installed is more advanced and robust than my very simple and crude project. No matter what you do, how fast you walk or when did you left the bag unattended the computer can tell. Be a good citizen ok :-) .

more on UCL (II)

it is 2 a.m. Currently I am not blogging at my desk. I am in Faizal's room. Well I could not sleep. I guess may be because I had slept during the evening. So rather than doing nothing while waiting for my eye become sleepy, it is better for me to write something here. I would like to continue writing review about UCL.

FOOD
There are few cafeterias and a refectory. However I don't really like eating there. The food are expensive (for me) and lack of variety. Normally I just go there to buy snacks or chocolates. If you are willing to walk about 15 min, you can buy some good food in Drummond Street near Euston. A lot of halal food sold there. Well if you have a bike, it will only take about 5 mins to get there. Alternatively, you can buy sandwiches. There are many English restaurants, fast food shops, Japanese and Chinese food restaurant, sandwich shops in Tottenham Court Road. Subway, Benjy's, Cafe Nero, Starbucks, and small shops you've never heard. Some of them offer cheaper food compared to the refectory. For sushi lovers, you can try Yo! Sushi or other shops nearby. There also a Sainsbury and Tesco near Tottenham Court Road.

SHOPPING
I you're bored just go to Tottenham Court Road or Oxford Street to have a window shopping. It is very Nice. Despite known for having a lot of food restaurants Tottenham court Road also known for having a large number of electronics shops. I can say it is like a mini Low Yatt Plaza in KL. Oxford Street is only 10 mins walk from UCL main building. It is famous a one of the most prestigious shopping area in London. Most of the shops are designers shop, clothes and mobile shop.

That's all. Alhamdulillah I am sleepy now.
