The end of Level 1

Friday, 20 July - Today marks an important point in my 'summer holiday life'. I had finishes my study in Arabic for level 1 in Ibn Jabal Institute. All praise to Allah, I managed to endure the challenges (e.g laziness) during the courses. Thanks to the support given by my parents and friends.

I really enjoyed following the course. Through the course, I gained a lot of knowledge especially about Arabic grammar. Understanding Arabic allows me to have a better access to Islamic knowledge. This gave me better appreciation to the Quran and Arabic terms used in religious talks. I would consider this as a life changing event because it has lifted me from not understanding to little understanding.

I also managed to get new friends. They are really good people. Being with them in the class, makes me feel motivated. I will be missing these brothers. I hope I can see them in other occasion in the future.

By the end of the lecture @ class, we had our Jumah prayer in the classroom due to request from the sisters and we are kind of late to go to the mosque. Brother Mamoon, our teacher gave the khutbah. I found that his khutbah is very interesting and inspiring. Eventhough it is short, there were many points of nasiha was given. I could not put everything here.

He began the khutbah by reciting surah Al-Alaq and few ayah from the Quran. Iqra-means Read! It an order verb derived from qa-ra-a. Why is it that the first ayah revealed is the order to read?

The importance of reading Quran in our life. As muslim, we believe that Quran is revealed to His Messenger. It is the word of God. It is the highest source of reference in our life. As a muslim, we should read the Quran everyday. Rasulullah pbuh states that the person who read Quran less than 10 ayah in a day is in a state of heedlessness.

Read with the name of god. It is important for us to renew our intention in doing every action. The right intention is the prerequisite that worship to be accepted by Allah. A prayer, might not accepted by Allah if we do not have khusyu' or the intention is to show off, riya'. Riya is a form of shirk.

Have true understanding. Understand the world according to Quranic perspective, not your own. The problem with muslims now days is not everyone of us understand the Quran, including me. Correct understanding can only be obtained, by learning the language itself. This is because if you read translation, it had lost half of its true meaning. Eventhough reading without understanding will give spiritual benefit, reading and contemplate, reflect upon oneself will give better benefit to us. As we all know, quran is revealed to all mankind. It has been said that, the moment you understand the Quran, you will feel as if it is the moment it is revealed to you. This is because previously, you know the Quran is there but you don't really understand what is it's content.

Level of understanding. For a scholar, he or she can understand the Quran in terms of linguistic, social, history etc. In order to achieve the scholarly level of understanding, one have to spend tremendous amount of time in his life. For those who are not able to do so or do not have access to scholars, it is enough to read and reflect upon yourself based on your understanding. That will benefit yourself. Everyone of us have a mushaf, therefore read and reflect!

# end of khutbah

After we finishes the Jumah prayer, the brothers planned to have lunch together but Bro Mamoon could not make it. As we about to depart, Bro Mamoon adviced to me was to work on my vocab. Inshallah. Jazakallahukahiran to my Arabic teacher and good luck to you in Egypt.
